Scheduling
Every sponsor has particular scheduling constraints, and many models
have been developed for our courses. Generally, programs work best
in extended sessions over a relatively short span. Ideally, some
part of the program can occur during released time, so participants
bring maximum energy to the task. However, a number of schedules
have proven effective: after-school hours, evenings, weekends, or
a single week in the summer. Even after a long day of teaching,
participants find that once the course begins, morale invariably
runs high.

Inservice Program Cost
The basic cost of our 30-hour onsite inservice programs is $5,000.
This amount covers compensation for the teacher-consultants leading
a course, program planning time, original copies of all handouts
in the course packet, the leader's local transportation expenses,
all related administrative work by Project staff, and a final report
on the program's participant evaluations. Enrollment may reach 30
in a workshop group; larger numbers will require a second leader
team and a consequent increase in the cost. Workshops that require
overnight travel for leaders involve extra expenses and may be billed
accordingly. Smaller schools or districts or those with limited
resources have often shared costs by co-sponsoring a course with
one or more neighbors. By allocating seats at about $200 each, the
complete program cost can be covered by a group of 25 participants.
In-Classroom Support Cost
In-classroom support and other workshops or special programs are
charged on a basis proportional to the 30-hour rate. Single-session
workshops, and programs led by the project directors are billed
at the individual consultant's rate.
Leadership Institute Cost
The IWP Summer Institute is provided at no cost, and in fact a
stipend of $750 is available to the first 25 applicants, thanks
to National Writing Project support. Optional 3-6 semester hours
graduate credit, National-Louis University, $120 per credit.
We recommend that schools or districts send teams of 3-5 teachers
to the Leadership Institute, so that they can support each other
in back-home leadership activities.

University
Support
The IWP has long been affiliated
with National-Louis University. IWP courses may be taken
for one or two semester hours of graduate credit, depending
upon the length of the program. For example, the 30-hour
workshops may be taken for two hours of credit at a cost
of $240. Individual teachers may enroll under this plan,
though there is no obligation to do so and no difference
in course requirements. The cost of tuition is over and
above the workshop fee paid to the project by the sponsor.
Credit may be arranged for other programs, provided that
content and contact hour requirements are met.
